During his research career, Selonen has held posts at the K.H. Renlund Foundation and Åbo Akademi University, as well as at the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) as research professor. His has held the title of docent in building stone geology at Åbo Akademi since 2001. Selonen’s PhD dissertation from 1998 explores the assessment of natural stone deposits.
Selonen has written several natural stone related papers and articles which have been published, for instance, in the publication series of the Finnish Natural Stone Association. He has worked as an expert in a wide range of natural stone projects both in Finland and abroad, as well as acted as a supervisor in natural stone related thesis projects.
Selonen has become familiar with the natural stone business while working in the biggest companies in the industry in Finland, such as Suomen Kiviteollisuus Oy and Palin Granit Oy. One of his main tasks has been developing the quarrying of natural stone. Selonen has been a member of both the Board of Directors and the Educational Committee of the Finnish Natural Stone Association. His contribution to formulating the association’s statements regarding environmental legislation has been substantial. He has invested his time and expertise to promote common causes in the natural stone industry at large.
The Board of Directors of the Finnish Natural Stone Association has given the Stoneman of the Year award since 2012. Now the prize was awarded for the fifth time. The following requirements are set for the receiver of this acknowledgement:
– The person has shown exceptionally high level of expertise in his own natural stone related work
– With his professionalism and by his own example this person has gained his colleagues’ respect
– He has otherwise skillfully promoted the positive development and fame of the natural stone industry
